Sixty-six countries Thursday called on the United Nations to urge members to decriminalize homosexuality, a position rejected by several Arab countries and the Vatican.

Gay activists have criticised Pope Benedict over his statement that mankind needs to be saved from homosexuality.

At his end-of-year speech to senior Vatican staff, Pope Benedict said that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment.

His words have angered gay groups and activists who say his comments were irresponsible and unacceptable.
